24 HOURS
IN HELSINKI

Idon't really recommend taking a city break in Helsinki in early February... it's freezing cold to walk around the city! The reason the airfare was so low was probably because the city is not visited by tourists a lot at this time of year.

I had 24 hours to explore the city and tried to visit some sites, but it was so cold I had ended up spending a lot of time in coffee shops and at my excellent hotel. Below are some of the sites that I explored. I will have to come back in the summer to get a better look at Helsinki.

Helsinki Cathedral

Unioninkatu 29, 00170 Helsinki

Helsinki Cathedral is the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran cathedral. It was originally built from 1830–1852 as a tribute to the Grand Duke of Finland, Tsar Nicholas I of Russia. Designed by architect Carl Ludvig Engel, it follows the neoclassical style of architecture and built in a shape of a cross.

Did you know...

Finland is known for its modern design heritage and Helsinki has a district showcasing this creativity. Helsinki Design District has more than 2000 design boutiques, museums, galleries and cafes for you to explore. You can pick up a map and follow the trail around the different neighbourhoods in the Design District.

Sibelius Monument

Sibeliuksen puisto, Mechelininkatu, 00250 Helsinki

The monument is a sculpture by Finnish artist Eila Hiltunen titled Passio Musicae. Dedicated to the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius (1865–1957), it is located at Sibelius Park. I found it very interesting to explore, with more than 600 hollow steel pipes welded together that you can go in and look up at.

Temppeliaukion Church

Lutherinkatu 3, 00100 Helsinki

Temppeliaukion Church is a Lutheran church, designed by architects and brothers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen. Opened in 1969, it is sometimes refered to as the Rock Church as it was directly into solid rock.

It's a small, but cozy church. I found it interesting to see the mixture of natural rock fused together with modern materials. Looking up, the copper dome adds an artistic contemporary twist to a religious place of worship.
