Gur-e-amir mausoleum is the final resting place of Timur (Tamerlane), the greatest Mongol king. Timur was the founder of the Timurid dynasty (1350-1507). Gur-e-amir complex is in the southwestern part of Samarkand, and comprises the tombs of Amir Timur and his descendants. The entrance portal dominates the area and is marvelously decorated with wonderful tile work. However, it's the interior that is a sight to behold. The walls and ceiling dome are exquisitely decorated with gold mosaics and dark blue glazed bricks.
Timur's tomb was opened by Mikhail Mikhaylovich Gerasimov, a Soviet archaeologist, on 20 June 1941
